Out of the clutter and messiness of the everyday, a photograph can capture the world with exact precision. Images heighten our senses; they provoke a sharpness of mind. To provide analytical structure to the processes of visual meaning-making, we’ve categorized kinds of images into genres. These genres frame subject matter, inform techniques, and motivate purposes. But genres are not rigid categories. Instead, they represent starting points for image makers and viewers, reflecting photography's inherently adaptive and transformative essence. In the “Sharp Ideas'’ series, we’re considering this ongoing process of definition and redefinition. In episodic form, this zine series presents contemporary image-makers as they reflect current trends and push the boundaries of genres.
